Bloomsburg Women's Basketball Downs Penn State Hazelton

BLOOMSBURG - Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) scored 25 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 97-49 pounding of Penn State Hazelton in the Huskies' season opener on Wednesday night.

Kegerreis was one of five Huskies to finish in double digits as Bloomsburg notched its highest point total since 2003 when the Huskies defeated Wilmington 97-42.

Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as freshman Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD/Archbishop Carroll) converted on the first four free throw shots of her college career and by the 10 minute mark, the Huskies had built a 21-point advantage.

At halftime, Bloomsburg lead 48 to 23 backed by 17 points from Kegerreis and 12 points from Lee.

In the second half, the Huskies continued their balanced offensive attack and cruised to the easy 97-49 victory.

Leading Penn State Hazelton were Rachel Selert who scored 21 points and Steph Halliday and Shannon Byers who each added eight points.

For Bloomsburg, Both Kegerreis and Lee finished with double-doubles. Kegerreis notched 25 points and 11 rebounds while Lee added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rounding out the Bloomsburg scoring were Kirby Johnson (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and Sarah Griffin (Philadelphia/Hallahan) who each had 12 points and Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) with 11 points.

The Huskies (1-0) forced the Lady Lions (0-1) to commit 31 turnovers in the game.

Bloomsburg will host the Patriot Inn Tip-Off Classic this weekend. The Huskies will take on Caldwell at 8:00 p.m. in the second game of the evening.
